MIZEN SAWMILL STUDY SMAILES, WESTON AND LIEBOW Syd Smailes history is set out by Freegard (2019). When the partnership Smailes and Weston was formed is not known. Smailes and Weston were in business prior to May 1908, the address of the business is simply “Pickering Brook”. The precise location is not clear. The business was sleeper hewing (Weston and Smailes, 1908). McNamara refers to sleeper hewing being one of the principle activities at Canning Mills prior to its closure in 1907 or 1908 (1953). Millar’s exclusive license expired in 1924 this then allowed others into the sawmilling market. Smailes' first mill was a firewood mill, this was set up in 1920 at the railway yard at Karragullen (Freegard, 2019, p. 53). Once the mill was established it became known as “all nations mill” (Freegard, 2019, p. 54). This mill was moved to the Pickering Brook Railway yard in 1927 (Freegard, 2019) alongaside the railway from Pickering Brook Junction to Barton’s Mill.
It appears Liebow came on board sometime after 1908. The partnership was dissolved on 28th January 1928, after this date Smailes was trading on his own (Unknown, Notice of Disolution of Partnership, 1928).
